About the Pineapple Isle
Nestled in the azure waters of the Pacific Ocean lies Lanai – a mere 140.5 square miles in size, but bursting with a rich history and culture that sets it apart from its neighboring islands. With a population of just over 3,000 residents, this quaint isle has earned its nickname of “The Pineapple Isle”, after its once booming agricultural industry which made it the world’s largest pineapple exporter. Many of its inhabitants are descendants of former plantation workers and they continue to possess a unique friendliness that is as sweet as the tropical fruit they once grew.
Lanai City, situated three miles away from the island’s airport, was originally built with purpose to house these agricultural workers in the early 1900s. It is here where you will find an array of stores carrying locally crafted goods, art galleries, cafes, grocery stores reminiscent of bygone eras, and more than a few eateries for you to choose from. If you’re lucky enough to visit this remarkable town on your travels, don’t be surprised if you’re greeted with friendly smiles and waves – it is customary for locals here to ‘talk story’, after all!
