Thanks to Dave Richmond from Frankfort, Illinois who took this photo from the Maui Nui Explorer on February 22nd.

This behavior is known as a “spy hop” as the whale may get its eye above the surface to get a better look. Scientists have confirmed that Humpback Whales have excellent vision both above and below water. We can’t explain it, but the whales love our boat and these types of experiences are becoming more and more common.

Our Maui whale watch tours will continue through mid April, so be sure to come out for a day on the water and learn about Maui’s most famous winter visitors. We depart from Lahaina Harbor every couple hours from 8am to 3pm. Ask about our Whale Season Pass which is good for 10 whale watches at one low price.
